If you’re not interested in online courses, check out the book R for Data Science by Hadley Wickham and Garrett Grolemund. One of the best books I have ever seen. Don’t get me wrong, I have never been to Harvard University. In fact, I’ve never even been to the US (assuming Harvard is there). But thanks to my newfound passion for online courses, I was able to experience first-hand the academic excellence of the best university in the world (arguable, I know). I’m talking about a 5-week rigorous course on “fundamentals of neuroscience” provided by Harvard University’s online learning initiative, Harvardx on the Edx platform.
For a student in India of very average intellectual ability and financial standing, Harvard is a dream that will likely remain a dream for the rest of his life. However, Edx has been providing this service for quite some time – inviting these leading institutes to your doorstep. The platform also has other top universities like MIT, Queensland, Columbia, San Diego, Toronto and so on. And most of the courses offered are of excellent standard and have a very wide collection from philosophy to robotics. No matter what subject you’re in love with, there’s a good chance you’ll find your perfect match here.
An online course may not be an accurate representation of the on-campus experience. But it was still worth it. And it was more like a digital classroom than a boring online lecture. A kind of interactive approach was used throughout the course to aid the learning process. The topic I chose, as mentioned above, was ‘neuroscience’ and it was the opposite of my expectations, rooted more in electrochemistry than psychology. Frankly, it was a challenging curriculum. And if it wasn’t for the approach the course took, I wouldn’t have done it.

The host was a Harvard professor, Dr. David Cox, whom I had known before. He is a neuroscientist at the Harvard Brain Lab. He is the star of the course, appearing in almost every video lecture and guiding participants throughout the course. The course started with things I knew, but then moved from basic neurology to full blown electrochemistry. It was kind of an exhilarating experience. Although the topic was new to me, I didn’t feel lost or disinterested anywhere. The analogies and visual representations discussed in the course further enhanced the learning experience.
But what made it more than an online lecture was the structure of the entire course. The entire course consisted of 4 modules and a final exam. Each module is divided into 5 or 6 chapters. And after each module there would be a module-related field trip and hands-on lab. After the first module, we visited the Boston Science Museum with Dr. David Cox (hands-on, of course) and witnessed the infamous lightning show by the gigantic Van de Graff generator, followed by a post-mortem examination of a human brain. When the second module ended, we visited the Warren Anatomical Museum, where Phineas Gage’s skull was preserved, and at the end of the course we were taught how to dissect a sheep’s brain (if anyone is kind enough to provide it, I’m willing to try it). And then there was the DIY Lab where we were introduced to Greg, someone I’ve admired for so long, and his company, Backyard Brains. We conducted experiments with cockroaches and ourselves. I know, I keep using the word “we” instead of “I”. This is not a mistake, but an intentional one, as the students in the class were more than independent online observers
