Maybe you have a reading curriculum that has ESL components and you don’t have ESL students. Maybe your math guides aren’t aligned with the Common Core and you’re using supplemental materials, but the school didn’t say to recycle the old ones. We all have things that we post just because we need to.
How Much Do Teachers Spend On Classroom Supplies?
Don’t let it be a mess, but instead pack it neatly and out of sight. That way, if you leave your position and need to leave resources, they will already be collected. I think a great way to do this is to put them in a copy paper box and tape a list of what’s inside to the box. That way you can leave the whole box behind or return it if that’s what you need to do. In my situation, I have a deep shelf and I just store them in the back, and the items I use regularly are placed in front of the box.
I prefer to keep teacher guides, textbooks, textbooks, etc. away from the students. This helps reduce visual clutter. Since students don’t need access to the textbooks, I keep them out of sight.
I use the small group table as a teacher’s workspace. Behind it is open shelving, so I store my books in decorative topless boxes grouped by subject area. They function almost like boxes. The students can’t see what’s inside and I can easily access them when I’m sitting there planning.
If you use a teacher’s desk, you can store them in drawers. You can also use the drawers of a filing cabinet. Regardless of whether you use a shelf drawer, it’s important to keep the subject areas together. Pans are available at the Dollar Store and are great on shelves to group books together. If you use a drawer, create tabbed sections using file folders.

Add related items such as pacing guides, curriculum maps, a binder or printable CD to the appropriate section or basket.
Many teacher’s guides are available online. Ask your curriculum coordinator if this is an option. Even if you’ve had the books for several years, you can still use their online guides by getting the code.
Take a tour of your building. Most schools have classrooms with the same furniture, built-ins, cupboards and shelving. See how other teachers arrange their books. Ask if they are happy with their systems. Use their methods as inspiration.
Review your personal resource collection with a critical eye. Tear off the pages you want to keep and place them in a binder.
