Online Classes Vs Modular Delivery Mode – Online learning is not the only form of distance learning. Although the spread of COVID-19 has sent educational institutions scrambling to move classes online, many have forgotten that there are other methods of distance learning.
For example, the Department of Education (DepEd) has developed TV/radio-based teaching methods to utilize existing technology to reach rural areas. However, the most popular form of distance learning to consider is modular learning.
Online Classes Vs Modular Delivery Mode
Modular Learning is a form of distance learning that uses Learning Modules (SLM) based on Key Learning Skills (MELCS) provided by DepEd. The sections include sections on motivation and assessment that serve as a comprehensive guide for both teachers and students in their careers. Teachers will monitor student progress through home visits (following social distancing protocols) and feedback systems, and guide those who need special attention.

Based on data collected through DepEd’s National Learner Enrollment and Survey Forms (LESFs), 8.8 million of the 22.2 million enrollees (39.6% of total respondents) preferred regular distance education for the coming school year. On the other hand, 3.9 million registered (17.6%) were part of blended learning (which uses different methods combined), 3.8 million (17.1%) preferred online learning, and 1.4 million and 900 , 000 subscribers preferred TV-based and radio. learning, respectively.
In a public high school in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, structured learning also emerged as the preferred learning method. According to their local LESFs, students cited the lack of available equipment and internet connectivity as the main reasons they preferred modular learning to online learning.
Based on LESF results. The majority of students (36.7%) prefer formal education, reflecting surveys across the country. (Click here for the full version of the information.)
The modular approach allows Filipino students to study in the comfort of their homes. Limited contact with teachers will make parents or guardians of students become role models for learners or “More Knowledgeable Others” (MKO).

Psychologist Lev Vygotsky defined MKO as “a person who has a better understanding or a higher level of ability than the learner, about a particular task, process, or concept.” Vygotsky proposed that human learning is a social process. A student may or may not study on his own, but he will study better with MKO. But what does MKO need to be?
Shiela Calimlim, a 36-year-old housewife and mother of Kris, a 12th grade student in a public school in Pangasinan, has her own understanding of her role in mainstream education. “I will do my best to help her in her studies. I am ready to learn her lessons, very difficult when it comes to her activities and her schedule. I will try my best because I believe that parents are the first teacher of a child,” she said. count.
Lack of available tools and insufficient data allowance are the main obstacles to normal education. (Click here for the full version of the information.)
‘ (channel), but they will not teach the subject. It is the teacher’s duty to teach,” explained Dr. Lourdes Servito, Superintendent of the School Division of San Carlos City, Pangasinan.
My Online Learning Experience As A Student Is Not So Good’ (opinion)
As for Dr. For Servito, the primary role of parents in normal education is to establish a relationship and guide the child. As MKOs, parents or guardians must:
(1) that they are responsible for interacting with teachers, barangay representatives, and other stakeholders to obtain the various materials and resources needed by the learner (eg, parts or books);
Parents and guardians will face various challenges in fulfilling their role as MKO. The first challenge lies in the fact that parents and guardians have different skills, knowledge, and qualifications. At Kris’ school, 50% are high school graduates, and only a fifth of the total number of parents have completed college. While eight out of ten (90.3%, 10 years and older) Filipino adults are literate enough to work in the community, it does not mean they are already qualified to teach. To ensure uniformity, equity, and quality of content, teachers must provide input with the help of parents.
Current research also shows a correlation between parents’ educational level and their income. Educated parents earn more, escape poverty and enjoy a better quality of life. In addition, parents’ access to education can enhance their sense of competence and confidence in guiding their children’s education. It is manifested in various ways, such as being more active in checking their child’s performance through parent-teacher association (PTA) meetings, providing for their child’s educational needs, and other parent-education duties.

Figure 4. Majority of parents (56.94%) in public high school in San Carlos City, Pangasinan are high school graduates. Only 17.12% graduated from college.
Another challenge relates to children’s ability to learn through imitation. In Social Learning Theory, behaviorist Albert Bandura states that students learn through imitation, observation, and modeling. Parents who are the primary role models for students, their attitudes, personal beliefs, thoughts, and feelings – cognitive bias – can affect the learning process of each student. It may be intentionally or unintentionally shown or taught to MKOs, depending on their understanding of a particular lesson or topic. One example would be when a creationist parent (a parent who religiously believes that everything comes from a divine creation) opposes their child learning a science lesson about evolution.
The final challenge in education comes under children who prefer MKOs. They choose who helps them with their lessons and activities, depending on how well they follow MKO. Some children like to be taught by their mother or father, or sometimes their older siblings. Students learn best when there is an appropriate and safe place to study. This good place is not just physical; MKO should provide a warm learning environment so that he loves learning even at home.
All of these are challenges brought about by MKOs’ differences in experience, learning achievement, cognitive biases, and even emotional connection with the learner.
Modular Distance Learning: Here’s What You Need To Know
With classes resuming on October 5, Ms. Rita Atienza, director of the Ateneo Teacher Center, cited solutions and recommendations for this new education system.
First, it hopes that the problem will result from a change in the old way of education. Current systems are overly focused on providing more content. It involves focusing on minute details rather than big picture ideas. Atienza explained, “We are always concerned with the right answer. We need to move to higher level thinking.”
Instead, basic literacy should receive special attention. “Many of our children cannot read well even if they are in grade 5. This is the biggest stumbling block. Therefore, there is a place to release the jam,” she said.
Second, identifying the MKO of the family and clarifying their roles and responsibilities will be important for effective guidance. Doing so will help clear up misconceptions and address some cases such as parental absence due to work. Atienza recommends giving parents guidance on monthly resources.
Teachers And Students Describe A Remote Learning Life
Dr. Servito echoed the same sentiment as schools have parental guidance to teach them what to do and what not to do, as well as the entire unit delivery process, from purchase to delivery.
Third, the responsibility given to MKOs should not be limited to content. Instead, Atienza says, “Rely on MKOs to teach students things like time management, study skills, what to do if a student doesn’t know what to do.” MKO doesn’t have to be highly educated, but it can still help.
If possible, MKOs can be trained in other ways. They can still guide students who need proof of a particular device.
Finally, apart from the content of education, we must strive to foster independent student learning. She suggested that schools could set aside the first week of school to teach students how to navigate the classroom. “Yung intentions, may gagawin ba kayo dyan? Babasahin lang yung intentions, wala pang gagawin diyan” she cited as an example.
Flexible Education And Training Systems
Instead of scaring students when they see something they don’t know about the module, they should be guided to understand what the learning unit is about. MKOs, asking their weak points in subjects (such as mathematics and science) and finding ways to cooperate with other MKOs who are good in that subject and for teachers to explain how to pay.
Figure 5. Riccie Sumogat, a Grade 12 ICT student in Pangasinan, shows his interpretation of the new learning standard with online and modular learning leading a distance delivery method.
“If [parents and teachers] are part of the goal of a child’s learning and should learn well, then we must work together and fulfill our different roles,” Dr. Servito said.
Dr. Servito recommends DepEd’s collaboration among stakeholders from all sectors, from LGUs to barangays and PTA councils. “Collaboration is one BIG C of 21st Century Skills, along with Communication,” she notes happily. She mentioned a work program in Region 1, where “teachers” who live in their community will teach up to 10 students from the same community, especially those who need special attention. As the new norm, she believes that this will generate more jobs, and will be an opportunity to give more attention to students.
