Private schools, including Catholic religious institutions, will begin online classes before public schools.

The Education Department has officially given permission to private schools in the country to open classes from August 24 to October 5 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In an advisory, the education department clarified that private schools “are allowed to continue provided they are strictly using only distance learning methods and no face-to-face classes.”
Schools that have started or are about to resume classes before October 5 must submit “relevant documents” to the Education Department.
The decision was taken after Catholic and private schools petitioned against another postponement of classes.
In a letter addressed to the Department of Education, Father Elmer Dizon, president of the Catholic Educational Association of the United States, said another delay in opening schools “would be a huge loss” that schools could no longer afford.

The pastor acknowledged that some member schools have already closed “due to very low enrollment and the financial difficulties they are facing.”
“Delaying the opening of classes for six weeks will result in a severe financial loss on their part, as most of these schools have not had enrollment figures,” Father Dizon said.
The priest assured that Catholic schools support the government’s efforts to ensure the safety of students, parents and teachers.
“The mandate to deliver quality private Catholic education becomes more difficult when we are navigating very troubling waters,” he said.

In a statement, the group said private schools “have explored a variety of innovative ways to support students’ continuity of education” amid the pandemic.
The group said it would help public school systems deliver education to youth “through the use of student vouchers or subsidies.”
“We have available student slots up to 60 percent of our capacity, or up to 3 million students,” read the group’s statement.
The group said the proposal would “help accelerate the readiness of the public school system” and, at the same time, help private schools maintain their operations.
