2 INTRODUCTION Now e-learning is widely implemented by academic teachers and corporate trainers for instructional purposes for its convenience and cost efficiency. 3 INTRODUCTION E-learning requires patience, motivation, self-confidence, dedication and a general understanding of computer use – characteristics that students may not fully possess. 4 PROBLEM STATEMENT E-learning does not have a way to ensure that students are actually learning the material. E-learning also does not accommodate students’ different learning styles. Many instructors are not properly trained to facilitate online learning. This study analyzes the effects of E-learning on different students. It gives statistical information about students who have experienced a class from the traditional class and one from E-learning. 6 METHODOLOGY The target population of this study is high school students. The research was conducted in an inner city high school that is a private, predominantly African American, all girls high school. 7 METHODOLOGY Students were placed in an online environment for three weeks learning Microsoft Word. They received a book to complement their learning. They also used online resources to gather more information to help them better understand the product. They were given assignments to complete out of the book. 8 METHODOLOGY The students were changed to the traditional classroom setting. We were given assignments to complete and a test at the end of the three weeks. During these weeks, the teacher explained several concepts and guided them through two exercises. At the end of the experiment, the students were given a survey to gather their thoughts and opinions about the course. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007
9 RESULTS A survey was made to the female students of the six classes who took the course. Three of the classes were composed of seniors and the other three were freshmen. The six classes were one hundred and thirty-five students, of which one hundred and seven students completed the survey. The results will reflect the 79% percent of students who responded to the survey. In addition to the survey, the comments reported by individual students each day will also be reflected in the results. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007

12 RESULTS 62.6% of the students surveyed did not feel comfortable with the online course. 56.1% would recommend the course to other students. 60.7% would take another course online, showing that they feel that there is a possibility that they can have a better experience with another course. 84.1% of the women interviewed believe that the course is harder than in the traditional place. Only 37.4% were able to keep up with assignments and tests and manage their time well. 79.4% believed they would receive a better grade if the course was taught in a traditional classroom setting. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007

13 RESULTS The test results show that 75% of the students failed the given test at the end of the first three weeks. – 10% received a low D – 10% received a C – 4% received a B – Only 1% received an A. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007
14 RESULTS Most students preferred the traditional environment in which they were used to learning. 88.8% said their experience in the traditional environment was better than that in the online environment. 79.4% think they learned more from a teacher explaining the concepts they needed to know. 65.4% thought the assignments were easier to complete and follow. 72.9% thought they were better prepared for their test. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007
15 RESULTS The comments received from the students were generally consistent. They did not like the online environment and felt that it did not help them learn what was required for the test. They were not able to get a clear understanding of the topics and did not do very well on assignments or tests. About 28% of students started, on an individual basis, complaints about the course. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007
16 LIMITATIONS Findings were limited to female high school students in an inner-city private school with predominantly black females. The students’ personal attitude towards the teacher may have influenced their comments and opinions. Some students did not actually read the survey and were honest about their answers. The target population of this study is the first year and seniors in high school. The current study does not break down differences in learning between freshmen and seniors. The result could be different if a further study is carried out. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007

17 CONCLUSION In this limited study, students did not seem to gain the same amount of knowledge with an online course as if they had used the traditional classroom method. Most of the students in this study were uncomfortable with the online learning setting and preferred an in-person teacher over classroom instruction. All these reasons support the existence of different learning styles, types of behavior, age and gender in the study group. Our limited study suggests that online courses are not for all students and may not replace traditional classrooms. 5/2/2019 ISECON 2007
