Online Course Degree – NEW DELHI: In order to make quality computer education accessible to all citizens in India, IIT Madras has launched an online BSc degree in Programming and Data Science. While the eligibility criteria are relaxed, to graduate with the BSc degree from IIT Madras students are required to work hard and clear examinations.
“We want to offer a quality online course to anyone interested in learning programming and data science. Our course is made online so that anyone can study from anywhere in India. But when it comes to quizzes and exams, students will need to work hard and appear in-person to clear the tests,” said Prof. Prathap Haridoss, IIT Madras.
Online Course Degree
“IIT Madras is an independent statutory educational institution established by the Parliament. It does not come under AICTE and UGC. The BSc degree will be another degree of IIT Madras along with the other B.Tech or M.Tech degrees. It will be treated . The degree is in accordance with UGC guidelines. The 2018 UGC regulations allow online degrees as a secondary degree while still in college,” clarified IIT Madras.

Talking about placements, Professor Haridoss said, “There is a huge demand for people with data science and programming skills in the market. Anyone who takes this course seriously can apply for jobs with this degree. Also, we will provide placement support To top-performing students.We will also provide soft skills training to the students and will also invite them to participate in IIT Madras internal projects.
After that, there is also the flexibility to exit at any level with a certificate or diploma. As far as costs are concerned, the fee depends entirely on the number of courses students take at a time. There is no upfront commitment financially as such. To successfully complete the course with a BSc degree, it may cost around Rs 3.55 lakh for general category students while the foundation course costs around Rs 32, 000. However, there are fee waivers for selected categories of students. IIT Madras has a dedicated website – onlinedegree.iitm.ac.in – which provides all the details about the course.
As far as the basic eligibility requirements are concerned, “The candidate must have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10. They should also have cleared Class 12 or equivalent and should also be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program or should have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. Degree (BA, BSc, BE, BTech, BCom, etc.).” Those who have dropped out of a Bachelor’s degree can also apply.
IIT Madras will provide recorded video content – lectures, problems – every week. The duration of each video would be 15-30 minutes, amounting to a total of about 2-3 hours of video content each week in each course.
Recreating A Computer Science Bachelor Degree With Online Courses
“Weekly assignment(s), which will be released along with the videos, will have to be completed and submitted online within the specified time. There will be 3 quizzes for each course, one each at the end of weeks 4, 7 and 10 . Each course further culminates in an end-term exam. All quizzes and end-term exams must be completed by the learner, in person, at designated exam centers, held under supervision. All in-person, invigilated quizzes and exams will be Scheduled for weekends, subject to availability of dates with exam partners,” according to the information on the website.
There are three types of assessments for each course – online weekly assignments, monthly in-person proctored quizzes and an in-person proctored final exam.
Note that those registering for this online course will not be able to access IIT Madras campus facilities. The full program takes between 3 and 6 years to complete. “On average, we expect a part-time learner to complete the degree in 4-5 years. Although this is the estimated time for the full degree, a diploma can potentially be obtained faster (around 8 months – 2 years), It said.
There are three levels in the program and to get a BSc degree in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras, a student must successfully complete all three levels. There is also the flexibility to exit at any level. Depending on the courses completed, the student can receive Foundation Certificate from Center for Continuing Education, IIT Madras or Diploma(s) from IIT Madras.

“A separate industry interaction cell has been set up as part of the online degree program to facilitate industry interactions with the learners in the program to encourage collaborations for internship and recruitment.
