You will explore the four ways to improvise and deepen your understanding of the nature of jazz and blues to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to improvise on the piano.
Improvisation may seem like a no-brainer, but it requires a lot of basic knowledge. To learn jazz improvisation, you will first need to understand its various influences and styles.
This course will introduce you to the blues, and you will discover why it is so central to jazz piano.
You will learn and compare the three major chords and scales of jazz and classical music, and play open sevenths in root position. You will learn about the vocal F blues and seventies, and you will play using the American F blues scale, seventh scales, and the whole blues scale.
About The Online Workshops
Using the diminished chord and scale will take your improvisation to the next level. You will learn about moving chords, scales and special improvisation, along with some other basics: the major seventh, the lonian scale and basic voicings, before playing and improvising.
Other exercises will include playing jazz standards such as the Blue Room and working to improvise on the themes using your new knowledge and skills.
By the end of this course, you will have a basic understanding of the blues, and how it relates to jazz improvisation – which is vital to learning jazz piano properly.
0:05 Skip to 0 minutes and 5 seconds Hello, my name is Ray d’Inverno and I would like to welcome you to the first of four courses on learning jazz piano. This one is titled “Start with the Blues”. The aim is to learn how to play modern jazz piano in a group context – playing with other musicians. I use two distinct approaches. First of all I have a camera above the piano that shows you exactly what I’m playing so you can copy it.

0:27 Skip to 0 minutes and 27 seconds So in that sense it’s a “How To” course: “Watch what I do – now you do it”. Secondly, I make extensive use of live tracks – usually pre-recorded bass and drum tracks that you play along to. In week three I show you in detail how to do that – how to set up your computer, or whatever you use, next to your piano or keyboard to facilitate this approach. What about me? Well I have been involved in performance, promotion, administration, and education for over 50 years. In particular, I ran a jazz workshop for over 15 years at the University of Southampton.
1:01 Jump to 1 minute and 1 second I also introduced jazz studies into the undergraduate music degree and have had a large number of jazz piano students over the years and have developed my own approach. What about you? Well you need some facility to play the piano already, especially for scales and arpeggios, some basic ability to read music and, above all, the motivation to complete the course, maybe share your experience with other people. So the rest of this trailer contains a few short excerpts from the course to give you an idea of what it’s all about. My ultimate wish is that you too will be delighted to be a part of this wonderful world of modern jazz piano playing.
Highlight the new job-related skills you’ve acquired and build on your existing qualifications with a hard-earned, industry-specific digital certificate – plus one for each course within your ExpertTrack.
At each stage of the course you can meet other learners, share your thoughts and participate in active discussions in the comments.
