Throughout the course, Roberts explores the four factors behind EQ – self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship development – to offer students scientifically supported strategies for understanding their emotions and being empathetic when communicating with others.

Each section includes a video tutorial and chapter quizzes to test your understanding. About the content. It takes about five weeks to complete the official course, but because it is self-paced, you can technically complete it in a week or even a few sessions longer.
When watching Roberts’ lecture, I found myself relating to many situations. She analyzes common problems in our personal and professional lives, focusing on how they can be avoided by understanding our emotions and being empathetic when expressing them to others. Many of the quizzes also focus on applying psychological concepts to real-life situations, which is very helpful in remembering how to use EQ in real life.
One example is how two colleagues get into a conversation that eventually turns into a heated argument. Roberts says that if you want to change the way you react emotionally, start by acknowledging your past behavior and use that to determine how you want to behave and react in the future. She notes that it’s a learning curve that requires practicing mindfulness, but once you have it, you’ll be able to control your emotional reactions even in times of conflict.
What Do You Guys Think Of People Who Put Hbs/wharton As Their Primary Education On Linkedin While Really It’s Just An Online Course/certificate?
Putting yourself in other people’s shoes sounds easier said than done, but it is very important: the course emphasizes that the ability to empathize with others is an important indicator of emotional intelligence – and, subsequently, strong relationships with others.
Like any other skill, cultivating empathy takes practice. Roberts breaks it down into two steps. One, she said, is to ask other people questions to learn how to process a situation or the effect it has on them. If you don’t have a chance to ask questions, you can still take time back and
Another step is to offer support and understanding — without expecting you to have words. Answers that others have requested. You may not be able to fix the situation or change it for them, but it is important that the person knows that you are actively listening and trying to understand them.
Roberts mentioned how we often wonder about how others see and think about us, which resonated with me; When I work in a team, I always wonder if others understand my methods and intentions. Roberts says the key to understanding how others perceive you is to ask for their opinion.

Feedback can go two ways: the fear of receiving a negative response can influence emotional reactions and self-esteem – or, you can appreciate and use the feedback to grow. If you want to get feedback, Roberts advocates a review-reform process, where you review how you’re perceiving, revise and revise to make sure you’re coming in a meaningful way, and repeat.
I recently took Roberts’ advice and asked a few colleagues for feedback on a group project for work. The main feedback I get is that sometimes, I prolong the conversation so much that I don’t get to the point quickly. While this may be good for informal banter, it can also hold the team back when it comes to making important business decisions. Now I practice being more focused and impactful in my communication so I can make it a habit. I find that doing this not only affects my EQ, but helps me become a better person at building relationships and communicating effectively.
Although I didn’t know much about EQ before
