Just as humans have immediate family members and more distant relatives, languages can be related and descend from an early “ancestor.” For example, the Indo-European family is a large group of languages, with some distantly related (like English, Hindi, and Greek) and more closely related (like Spanish and French, which evolved from Latin). .
The Zulu language itself—mainly in South Africa, is spoken by approximately 12 million people. Zulu joins Swahili as Duolingo’s second Bantu language. Bantu is a group of languages within the Niger-Congo language family – one of the world’s major language families. While the English language group known as *Germanic* includes several dozen languages, Bantu has hundreds! Bantu is spoken by about 350 million people in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa.

Just as members of a human family often share certain characteristics, such as having brown eyes or the same smile, languages have similar characteristics within families. This means they have similar sounds, similar ways of conjugating verbs, or the same word order in sentences, to name a few possibilities.
An important thing to say before diving into all the super cool qualities of Bantu and Zulu is that while it’s exciting to talk about all the interesting features of languages, there’s also a long history of treating non-Western languages as curious oddities. A colonial mentality positioned these languages (and their speakers) as strange or “other”. But we could easily say that English is an odd duck for having too many vowels or dozens of words for suburban lawn care. Each language has its own unique qualities – it just depends on what you’re comparing them to as a point of reference.
In the case of Bantu languages, here are two shared features that new learners may be particularly interested in: noun classes and addition!
The Bantu languages share a word classification system called “noun classes”. (If you’re familiar with grammatical gender categories, noun classes are another way of grouping nouns!) In Zulu, every noun—person, place, or thing—belongs to one of 19 possible classes. A category includes information such as whether a noun is singular or plural, and categories are often based on some shared meaning of the nouns (for example, whether the noun refers to a person, an animal, an abstract thing, etc.).

Noun class is really important for the grammar and sentence formation of the language. For example, each noun is different from the other
Nouns belong to Class 5, a category that includes body parts, some animals, and more. Which noun class a word is in tells you something about how it modifies accompanying adjectives and verbs. In the chart below, you can see how the adjective for “big” changes depending on the noun of what is being described as “big”.
(Note that the order of adjectives and nouns is different in English than in Sulu: the noun comes before the adjective in Bantu languages.)
Think English compound words or Spanish verb conjugations, but more extreme, and for more word types! In Zulu and other Bantu languages, a sentence can be made up of only one or more words, with many word endings, suffixes and other additions all on one word.
When Online Becomes Offline
Addition occurs in all languages of the Bantu group (and also in many unrelated languages such as Turkish and Japanese). In the example below, you’ll see that Zulu and Swahili use one word to express the same concept that English uses three words for!
One of the most distinctive features of Zulu is its click consonants. These are very noticeable sounds, created by a quick movement of the mouth that produces a loud clicking or tapping sound. The three basic click consonants combine with other sounds to create 15 different click sounds!

Only a small number of Bantu languages have click consonants. They were borrowed from a neighboring language family called Khoisan, unrelated to Niger-Congo or Bantu. But because Khoisan speakers have long been geographical neighbors of Zulu and Xhosa speakers, these languages have acquired click consonants from them. Sharing is caring!
