Your art book should be… about your art! These questions and tips should help guide you through the layout process.
Art Book
The first order of business for an art book is the execution of the art documentation and subsequent presentation in print. To ensure the latter goes smoothly, you must start with a high-resolution image or scan of your work. Don’t take fancy photos with your phone. Use lighting and cameras that produce higher resolutions. If you don’t have lighting, take your creation outside on an overcast day, the lighting should be perfect!

Once you have the images, clean them up and correct the colors (if necessary) in design software such as Photoshop. Pro tip: don’t over edit! Then save your image at 300 DPI or higher so your image won’t appear pixelated when printed.
While layout design is an art in itself, be wary of over-designing. Art books tend to be very clean, with the artwork displayed in the middle of the white pages with a small (8-10 pt) title at the bottom. If you decide to add graphics or bold text, make sure it complements your artistic image.
A clear space is also what your art needs. Try to avoid crowding the images with any extraneous information, so the art can breathe and the viewer can absorb the images without distraction.
Most art books revolve around a certain theme. In order for your writing to resonate with your audience, you must deftly guide them to your point. One way to solve this problem is to start with directories. Immediately present the structure to the audience. You can then reinforce the table of contents with small navigation details at the bottom and/or bottom of each page, similar to how books display chapters at the top and page numbers at the bottom. For example, if your art book showcases a continuous series of works of art, name the page of the work you’re talking about as the title at the top. That way, viewers always know where they are, even if the section is multi-page.
