Now I am sharing what I did to develop my advanced reading, writing, speaking and reading skills before the exam.

Instead, it’s full of practical tips to help you develop advanced study skills, not just if you’re taking the exam, but whatever your language. I Finally Found A Language School Worst Than Göthe Online
Before you get down to serious work on the exam, you need to be ruthlessly objective about your current level of German.
I hadn’t actively studied (or used) German for many years and so the first step for me was to clearly understand what level my German was at.
I was evaluated at the Goethe Institute in London. They offer these for free before the start of each teaching session and are part of the preparation (and recruitment!) process for the courses they teach.
If you have recently completed a course or short exam, you will already have a good idea of your level, strengths and weaknesses.

On the other hand, if you’re in the same position as me, try a face-to-face assessment. If you can’t afford the fees and you’re working with a teacher, ask their opinion first. You can also find automated online assessments, although they vary in quality.
My original plan was to go straight for the C2 exam and was disappointed when the assessor said she thought I was on the border between B2 and C1 (even though she added “high to speak”).
Ultimately, an objective approach helped me reflect more accurately on my earlier extensive engagement with German.

I could have gone for C2 instead of C1. Whether multiple levels is a possibility for you depends on your approach. Do you see more benefit in combining or do you think there is more value in shooting for the stars?
If you’re anything like me, you can’t be 100% confident in sticking to any plan, so brace yourself.
Once your assessment is clear about your level and which skills need more work, the next step is to build study and practice.
Make sure to set your goals (to sit an exam, read X novel, give a five-minute speech during a meeting with Y or whatever).

Make sure you have a clear time-frame. As I argued at the beginning of my German project, a three-month time-frame: long enough to make noticeable progress, not long enough to risk losing focus.
I did this by enlisting the support of a community of learners. I joined the Add1Challenge (my main review of the format is here ).
Second, my second project Revive My German as I argued in detail, document your progress from start to finish. You can do this through an accountability sheet (Add1Challenge, your own spreadsheet, or simply emailing that friend with your intentions at the beginning of the week and your accomplishments at the end).
You can try reading aloud or recording audio of Skype conversations. Just for yourself or to share with your support group, teacher or friend.

Third, book your lessons or language tandem as far in advance as you can. This makes it more difficult to skip regular studies.
To top it off, I also booked my exam at the Goethe Institute Berlin in good time (the London Goethe Institute does not conduct the C1 exam very often).
The stakes were properly raised. I put my money and time where my mouth is. Exam date: December 18, slap bang in the middle of the pre-Christmas party season. umm Not ideal – but, hey, did I want this or not?

When you’re at level C with German, you may feel that the textbook is somehow beneath you.
Sometimes it’s best to be led step-by-step through the curriculum. Self-directed learning is all well and good, but if you only focus on the structures you find difficult, you may overlook the ones you feel confident about, but where you still have a thing or two to learn.
You are not the first person to reach this level. If the authors were worth their salt, they would have focused on the recurring difficulties of language. Chances are some of these are yours, even if you don’t realize it at the beginning of your preparation.

At the same time, the textbook will cover a lot of material on the most sophisticated structures and you will get to practice different registration and communication strategies.

When you’re in the early stages of a language, it’s good advice to focus on what you personally need and what you enjoy. Not at this level, dude. Now it’s just a matter of pushing yourself out of your subject comfort zone and stepping up to meet the expectations of others.
The textbook will force you to consolidate and expand your vocabulary by providing topics to read and discuss beyond your pet interests.

Make sure your book has audio, exercises and answers so you can use it on your own.
You should also use the book with your teacher to reinforce your self-study. I pdfed my teacher copies of the pages I wanted to discuss in the lessons.
My textbook had a comprehensive grammar summary at the back but at this level – as you aspire to mastery – you need to know the streets as well as the highway or your language and you’ll appreciate a good comprehensive grammar book to check that out. Fine points.
For other languages, try to find an equally comprehensive but accessible option, you can correct yourself through exercises.

A good dictionary online or – in my case (you’ve guessed it) – a decent hard copy is also an invaluable tool.
You can download complete past paper from Goethe Institute website. But there is only one. Check what is available from your chosen exam board.
As the title suggests, it focuses entirely on the Goethe C1 exam. It contains a detailed description of all the four parts of the exam, along with helpful tips. These are also included
A complete “mock” paper (including two C2s containing material for the listening test), with past answers.

If you are doing Goethe C1, I suggest you try this book (or one of the similar texts in the market). For other languages/exams, try to find something similar. Also check the latest syllabus details of your board online.

The Goethe exam tests each of the four skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in separate sections (like many other exams). You get 25% for each section and you need to pass each section (reaching 60%).
Even if you don’t sit for the exam, you can’t excel at the advanced level without developing all four skills.

During the first half of my three-month project, I engaged in general integration of the four skills without much reference to the test. I was doing things that I knew I would be doing for years to come after the exam.
As with the other passive skill – reading – you can develop and practice listening skills on your own, without the help of a teacher.
In addition to using the audio material that came with my course book, I listened to good quality speech radio for at least an hour a day. I have built this into my normal routine. German radio replaced English or Russian for my morning bath and my evening meal.
If watching the evening news on TV, watching videos, watch an evening program in your target language. Or explore other speech-heavy genres on TV or YouTube. The material available in a widely spoken language like German is practically limitless.
